About Us

Current Practice

Today, Medau classes provide multiple benefits to many people across the UK. Our classes are adaptable to a variety of settings. We offer recreational group fitness classes, chair-based movement classes, and a range of workshops for both experienced and new Medau movers.

Medau Movement - Gymnastic Sticks

Our History

Medau Movement was founded nearly 100 years ago in Germany by Hinrich Medau. Combining his studies of music, sport, and gymnastics, Medau created a transformative exercise method that included movement with and without apparatus. He and his wife Senta developed the style which continues to be enjoyed today.

Molly Braithwaite, with Peggy Secord’s assistance, established the Medau Society in the UK in 1952. Classes quickly grew in popularity and spread throughout the country. Today, we support our teachers and maintain contact with the “Friends of Medau” via The Medau Teachers Association.

“Fun and friendly exercise class. A variety of stretches, sequences, and equipment. A lovely way to stay fit and well.”

Making a Positive Difference – Medau DVD

In 2020, with funding from Sport England and the National Lottery, and with the help and support of EMDUK, Medau produced a DVD of Chair-Based Medau Movement Exercises specifically designed for residents of Care Homes. These exercises help them stay active, socialise, and have fun!”

If you are a Care Home or Community Group and would like to experience our work via DVD—and with the support of one of our teachers to help you get set up with your group—please get in touch with medausecretary@gmail.com for more information.

“The teachers are incredible – personable, knowledgeable, and make exercise fun. I love Jo, Jane, and Margaret – they’re ACE Superstars!”
