Busy Busy in Southwest

Location

Our Teacher in the West Country Yvonne Cottam like many of our teachers is not only a Medau teacher but also a supporter of their local community.  Yvonne was nominated for a Unsung Hero Award and was filmed by Spotlight South West

She sent us the following about her busy day in November.

Event Details

I run quite a lot of activities for the 'older' person in and around Dartmouth - these include Medau, of course (two classes and a chair-''based session at our local care home), tennis, badminton, pickleball and walking rugby.  I'm also secretary to the Dartmouth Indoor Pool Trust and did a lot of fundraising to get the pool built in 2016 after managing to raise £2.5m (not all by myself!!!).  It was one of the Trustees that nominated me for the Unsung Hero award and I was shortlisted as one of three 'worthy' participants at the end of 2021.

Wednesday is my busiest day so 3rd November was chosen as the day the reporter would come and film me 'at work'.  I start all my days with a swim! Then on a Wednesday I run a sports group at our Leisure Centre for the local u3a where we play badminton, table tennis and pickleball.  Then I move to another hall where I take one of my Medau classes.  These were the groups that were filmed.  The reporter was really nice and made everyone feel at ease and he actually joined in a game of pickleball as he'd never seen it before - and was quite good at it!  I then went on to three different tennis groups I manage during the afternoon!

Although I didn't win the local 'heat' it did get a good airing on telly and I actually picked up at least 4 new people at the time and am still getting enquiries from people who had seen the coverage.

WELL DONE YVONNE
